Chemnitz Linux Days 2024: “Making a mark”

92 presentations, ten workshops, and a special junior program await guests on March 16 and 17, 2024

Under the motto “Making a mark”, the Chemnitz Linux Days will take place on March 16 and 17, 2024 in the Central Lecture Hall and Seminar Building of Chemnitz University of Technology. Visitors can expect a varied program of lectures and workshops, space and opportunities to exchange ideas in the exhibitor area and numerous other offers relating to Linux and open source.

The lecture program on Saturday includes offerings in the areas of getting started, school, finance, media, artificial intelligence (AI) and data security. The beginners' forum will cover topics such as digitizing analogue photos, creating vacation videos with the OpenShot software and encrypting emails. In the “School” section, Arto Teräs gives an insight into the use of the open source solution Puavo in Finnish and German schools. In the AI section, Michael Christen looks at the function of ChatGPT and presents an open source alternative with a similar function, before Dr. Christian Klostermann looks at “AI and ChatGPT” from a legal perspective.

On Sunday, topics from the areas of desktop, hardware, data center, community and soft skills are on the agenda. As a “special”, the lecture “Mit der Elektrotechnik auf Du und Du” by Dr. Bertram Frei is aimed at young visitors. With “make CLT”, the Linux Days organization team will provide insights into the planning and structures of the event itself.

A total of ten workshops, in which, for example, LaTeX knowledge and programming skills with J, Go or Python are taught, meet the desire for practical in-depth knowledge. Registration is required to take part in a workshop, and a participation fee of five euros is charged in addition to admission. The "CLT Junior" workshop is aimed specifically at children and young people aged ten and over. Here, participants can learn about electronics and microcontrollers, familiarize themselves with the Arduino minicomputer, program games or explore the open-world game "Minetest". Registration is also required for the CLT Junior offers; the participation fee is five euros regardless of admission.

The program will be completed by the opportunity to ask specific questions and engage in lively discussions in the exhibition area, by the recognized certification examinations of the Linux Professional Institute, the kit soldering at a total of six stations and the “Praxis Dr. Tux”, which can be contacted if help is needed with hardware or software problems.

The Chemnitz Linux Night on Saturday evening from 6 p.m. in the “Bar Lokomov”, Augustusburger Straße 102, forms a bridge between the two event days.

Details of all the events, registration forms and information on travel and accommodation can be found on the Chemnitz Linux Days website at www.linux-tage.de.

Background: Chemnitz Linux Days (CLT)

Back in 1999, the organizing team at the time decided to “simply make a Chemnitz Linux Day”. It started on March 6, 1999 with 24 lectures, an install party and several demonstrations. The event quickly grew. Most recently, well over 3,000 visitors flocked to the Central Lecture Hall and Seminar Building at Chemnitz University of Technology for the CLT weekend. With around 90 lectures, an extensive workshop program, a packed foyer with exhibitors from projects and companies in the “Linux-Live” area and the “CLT Junior” offer, the event has firmly established itself as one of the largest of its kind in the German-speaking world. After a forced break in 2020, the event was held digitally in 2021 and 2022 and has been taking place on site again since 2023.
