Chemnitz Capital of Culture

The programme of the Capital of Culture at the Chemnitz Linux Days

The reason why the motto ‘the Culture of Open Source’ was chosen for the current Chemnitz Linux Days is that Chemnitz is a European Capital of Culture this year. This not only means that we will be welcoming a particularly large number of guests from near and far, but also that there will be a large number of cultural events throughout the year.

We would like to present a few ideas of what you can experience around the CLT programme here, especially for those travelling from afar. The entire programme can be found on the Capital of Culture website, but here are just a few personal recommendations.

The smac, the archaeological museum, has been running the special exhibition ‘Treasures & Tragedies - Mining in the Ore Mountains’ since last year. This special exhibition gives all visitors an insight into the transformation of mining - from the Bronze Age to the 21st century.

The Industrial Museum is also a wonderful museum in Chemnitz, which is particularly worth a visit for fans of technology and tinkering with it. From huge steam engines to the good old pneumatic tube system, there is a wide selection of great exhibits. And if you didn't know what connection the dishwashing liquid ‘Fit’ has with Chemnitz can find out in a special exhibition.

On the Friday before the Chemnitzer Linuxtage, the Garage Campus, an intervention area on the site of the former tram depot of the local Chemnitz transportation company (CVAG), will be opened. As a place that invites creative exchange, the opening weekend will be heralded here with music and hands-on activities.

If you arrive early and want to experience something completely different, you can even try your hand at ‘Vole basket weaving art’ on Thursday. Maybe you can even catch a Tux or two with a basket like this.
